Why Catholic? in Spanish

From: Lynn Ekstrom -- Por Que Ser Catolico?

A number of parishes -- like St. James (in Elizabethtown); our community, St. Edward; and St. Bartholomew Parish (both in Jeffersontown) have sizable numbers of persons meeting in Spanish to complete (and enjoy) Season 1 of Why Catholic?

At St. Edward's, to serve our hispanic households, we are using primarily the Spanish editions of the Family Faith Bulletins for the 6 sessions of Season 1: Liturgy and Sacraments. Our multi-generational grupo de familias meets on Mondays for -- 7:00 PM Mass in Espanol; 7:40-8:15 PM Adults Discussion of FFB; 8:15-8:30 PM Snacks & Social Time. During each 7:40 to 8:15 period, the many children attending gather, with several adult volunteers, for related activities in Spanish mostly (like the adults). The pre-teens and teenagers also meet (in English) with a youth ministry volunteer. Of course, all ages gather readily for those snacks and social time.

Season 1 is fast approaching an end. So is Lent 2011. Good luck to all who are coordinating and participating in Why Catholic? in whatever language(s)!

Physical and Spiritual Rebuilding

How are you doing so far? Are you digging deeper to better understand your faith? Are you sharing with your group and allowing the Spirit to work inside of you? I recently heard from a group that has traveled to Mississippi for the past four years since hurricane Katrina to help rebuild after that terrible devastation. That same small group meets now and they say that they are bonding even more. This group is doing physical rebuilding to help others and they are also spiritually rebuilding themselves each time they meet. Why Catholic? can do the same for you. What are your thoughts? What has inspired you and your group? We would love to hear from you. Email us at whycatholicnow@gmail.com

It is March 8, 2011. Around the world, we celebrate Mardi Gras -- Fat Tuesday -- the fiesta before Lent begins. Green, gold, and purple are the colors of the day. Tomorrow, on March 9, Ash Wednesday comes around. Lent begins. May you have a great Mardi Gras and a spiritually-uplifting, conversion-filled Lent.

The new spiritual program "Why Catholic? -- A Journey Through the Catechism" officially begins, for adults, during Lent 2011 in our Archdiocese.
